A Weekend
at Sheridan’s Pace

Eat well. Walk slowly. Say hello.

Main Street after dark
A note from your hosts

The best way to see Sheridan is to stop hurrying.

Everything is slower here. That is the point. If you meet someone walking down the street, say hello. They will likely do the same for you. We think that speaks volumes about Sheridan.

This is the weekend Kayla and I would give a friend: enough structure to know where to go, with enough room left to notice where you are.

01 · Friday evening

Arrive. Settle in.
Let Main Street quiet down.

There is no need to squeeze Sheridan into the first night. Check in, unpack, and make one good dinner reservation.

Dinner at Le Rêve

Le Rêve sits inside the historic Cady Opera House. We always reserve. We have often found a table a day ahead, but book earlier if you have a particular evening in mind. Start with the French onion soup. The rest of the menu changes often, which is part of the appeal.

Tiki drinks in a French restaurant in Sheridan? I’m here for it. Kayla has enjoyed the pistachio Mai Tai; I love a Painkiller. The drinks change, too, so see what is on the menu when you visit.

Walk Main Street when it is quiet

Most shops will be closed. That makes it easier to notice the brickwork, old signs and windows. In summer, continue to Kendrick Park and find the small community ice cream stand.

Market first. Coffee second.

Saturday begins at Landon’s farmers market for local produce and bakery items. The market currently runs every Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Then stop at Java Moon Station for coffee—or order ahead if you want to keep moving.

If we were not working Saturdays, we would sit down at P.O. News. I order the Italian crumpet; Kayla orders eggs Benedict. The coffee is roasted locally by Manchester Coffee.

Shop with a point of view

A shameless plug: Real Deals is our store. Stop in on Saturday, then head downtown for the sort of things worth bringing home.

  • King’s Ropes — Buy the hat. Otherwise people may not believe you were here.
  • Red Bison Studio — Find the coffee mug you will reach for every morning.
  • Sheridan Antiques & Best Out West — Browse without looking for anything specific.
  • King’s Museum — A free collection attached to King’s Saddlery.

Lunch

Lunch at Bino’s

Bino’s is a locally owned butcher market with a food trailer. Nothing fancy, just solid food. Kayla orders the gyro with extra tzatziki. I order the spicy cheesesteak—and it is actually spicy.

Late afternoon

Big Horn, pizza and the long view

Drive south to Big Horn Mercantile. I like the Italian Brickhouse; Kayla likes the taco pizza. From there, head toward the lower Red Grade turnouts for the valley view. The lower stops are straightforward. A regular car can continue higher in good conditions, but I recommend a truck or a vehicle with more clearance—or park lower and hike.

Red Grade is an unpaved mountain road. Check weather and road conditions, stay within your vehicle’s limits and turn around when conditions change.

Late morning

Reserve brunch at the Brinton

The Brinton Bistro serves a farm-to-table brunch inside the museum, looking toward the Bighorn Mountains. Make a reservation and leave enough time to see the museum rather than treating the view as a backdrop for a quick meal.

Summer Sundays

An afternoon at polo

In season, drive to the Big Horn Equestrian Center for Sunday polo. Admission is free, and the official schedule changes with tournaments and weather. Bring chairs or tailgate from the car. You do not need to understand polo before you arrive.

If the weekend changes

Sheridan has a second plan.

Winter

Go where the snow is.

Ski Meadowlark or Antelope Butte. For a simpler afternoon, sled at the Bowl near Arrowhead Lodge.

Bad weather

Catch a movie.

For a rainy afternoon, check what is showing at the Centennial Theatre. A movie and popcorn make an easy change of plans.

Fall

Our favorite season.

Cooler temperatures, long-enough days and the kind of weather that lets every part of this itinerary breathe.

The only rule

Leave space between plans.

If you hustle through Sheridan, you will miss the reason to be here. Walk slower. Look up. Say hello.
